The Academy Awards are only two days behind us and there’s already chatter of a sequel to one of this year’s Best Picture nominees.
Mark Wahlberg dished about a continued take on “The Fighter” while walking the Oscar red carpet this past Sunday (February 27). Supposedly, he’s already entered into talks regarding a companion film, which would focus on the torrid ring-bound history of Micky Ward and boxing opponent Arturo Gatti.
We’re not exactly shocked by the prospect – after all, 2011 is already the biggest year for movie sequels, so why not up the ante for 2012? We’re fairly certain these other five Best Picture nominees could be stretched into a second story, too!
The Social Network
A billionaire’s work is never done – the legal, personal and professional plights of Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Sean Parker, Divya Narendra and the Winklevoss twins could be fashioned into a trilogy at this point. Perhaps Academy Award-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin could pen in a bit part for Andy Samberg as well?
Winter’s Bone
If you’ve seen director Debra Granik’s haunting, understated family drama, you’re aware that Ree Dolly’s (Jennifer Lawrence) main objective comes to a harrowing conclusion, but the journey of revenge is just beginning for her uncle Teardrop (John Hawkes). We loved Hawkes in the movie, despite his limited screen time – we’d be thrilled to glimpse a continuation of the tale through his eyes.
Toy Story 3
It was as hard for us to say goodbye to Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, Rex and the rest of the gang as it was for their college-bound owner Andy. Arguably harder, actually – unlike Andy, we sobbed our way through an entire box of tissues during the flick. Without giving too much away, the crew of misfit toys has always managed to stumble upon misadventures, regardless of locale. We know that animated shorts are on the way, but we hope we haven’t seen the last of their own full-length tales!
True Grit
There’s a bit of a fast-forward between the emotional, action-packed climax and the final moments of this Coen Brothers western. We’d definitely be down for a plot focused on the intricacies of Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) and Mattie Ross’ (Hailee Steinfeld) story, if only for the awesomely garbled Brigdes take on all that Coen-esque dialogue!
Inception
Frankly, we just want to see if the totem top stops spinning.
